How to Prepare Your Landscaping for Winter Weather

Winter weather can come unexpectedly, and if it catches you and your landscaping off guard, it could be disastrous for some of your plants or trees. Thankfully, there are all sorts of different things that you can preventively do to ensure that winter weather conditions won’t wreak havoc on your property.

If you haven’t prepped your landscaping yet, put in on your weekend to-do! Below are a few useful ways to prepare your landscaping for winter weather.

Finish Up Fall Landscaping

If you’re in the tail end of fall, most of the leaves have probably fallen off of your trees and are partially covering your lawn (no matter how many times you’ve already raked the leaves, there always seems to be more leaves!) If you look out your back window at an ocean of leaves, it’s time to break out the rake! Leaves can fall all the way up to the first frost or snowfall of the year, so it’s important to rake them at least once a week, especially if you have large trees. If winter weather catches you before you can clear your lawn of leaves, all the grass underneath them won’t be able to receive the sunlight it needs to resist disease and remain healthy, potentially ruining your lawn.

Check Your Irrigation System

If you have an irrigation system, it can be easy to set it and forget it! If it’s getting close to winter time, you’ll want to consider winterizing your irrigation system. This precaution will prevent future costly repairs by the time spring comes around. A professional irrigation service will be able to run through a specialized pre-winter checklist that ensures your irrigation system is ready for the first frost and beyond.

Fertilizer is Your Friend

Fertilization is another important winterization tool for your landscaping and plants. Fertilizer will ensure your turf is properly prepared for frost and winter temperatures. By fertilizing in mid to late fall, you will be keeping the soil where your grass and plants are rooted rich in nutrients. This will not only help overall root growth, but it will help grass survive the colder months, and ensure that the grass will a jump start on looking green and gorgeous for the warmer spring months.

Wrap Up the Hedges

And the shrubs too! Protect fragile shrubbery and hedges with a sturdy yet breathable fabric, such as muslin or burlap. This will protect your plants’ leaves and thin branches from frost, snow, sleet, freezing winds, and everything else lovely that comes along with winter weather! You can either set up stakes around the shrub or hedges and staple the fabric to it, or you can drape the fabric around the plant, and tie it securely at the base of the plant with twine.
