Nurseries here sell plenty of stock that cannot handle our soil. Iron chlorosis — yellow leaves with green veins — is the tell, and it is a soil problem, not a fertiliser problem.
Natives that earn their place
Cenizo, blackfoot daisy, damianita, Mexican feathergrass, yaupon holly, agave and live oak all want what this county already has: sun, drainage and very little water once established.
Less water, less feeding, fewer pests
Adapted plants need little fertiliser, resist most local pests and feed native pollinators. That is not an environmental argument, it is a maintenance one.
