Jarrell is a few miles north of Georgetown on I-35 and one of the fastest-growing small cities in Texas. Most of the homes are new, built on what was farmland a few years ago, and most of the yards start the same way: thin builder sod over compacted fill, a couple of shrubs by the front door, and an irrigation controller still on its factory schedule. The ground here is Blackland Prairie — deep, dark clay, flat and open to the wind, with almost none of the limestone that sits under Georgetown. It grows anything once it is prepared and it moves more than any other soil in the county, which changes how a patio base is built and how a bed is drained. We are based a few miles down the interstate in Georgetown and build for it.
Blackland clay is the best and worst soil in Williamson County. It holds water and nutrients, so beds and lawns establish well once the compaction from construction is broken and the soil is amended. It also swells when wet and shrinks when dry — enough to open cracks you can lose a hand in by late summer — so anything rigid that sits on it has to be built for movement. Patios, walkways and outdoor kitchens go on a compacted, engineered base with proper drainage, and edging is set to hold a line through the seasons rather than float on top of the clay.
Because most Jarrell yards are new, the work is usually the whole yard at once rather than one feature at a time: grade so water leaves the foundation, beds and edging along the front, a shade tree placed where it will actually help in ten years, sod or a xeriscape where the builder's turf failed, and the irrigation reprogrammed or repaired so it waters the plants instead of the street. Planned together, it costs less and looks like one yard.
Open lots mean sun and wind all day. Native and adapted plants, deep mulch and drip irrigation on a realistic schedule are what survive an August out here, and a patio with a fire pit or a fence line for privacy is what turns a bare back yard into somewhere you sit.

My Jarrell yard is brand-new builder sod. Where do we start?
With a walkthrough. Most new-construction yards need the same three things in order: grading so water moves away from the foundation, the irrigation checked and reprogrammed, and the soil broken up and amended before anything is planted. From there we plan beds, edging, planting and any patio or fencing as one yard, so you are not paying to redo the first job when the second one goes in.
Does Jarrell's clay soil change how a patio is built?
Yes. Blackland clay swells and shrinks with the seasons, so a patio, walkway or outdoor kitchen has to sit on a compacted, engineered base with drainage built in, or it heaves and cracks. It is the same rule we follow on the clay pockets in Georgetown and Round Rock, and it is the difference between a patio that is level in year five and one that is not.
