Five of the Best Fruits and Vegetables to Grow in Texas
Five of the Best Fruits and Vegetables to Grow in Texas - B&B Landscaping & Masonry. Williamson County Landscaping.
It’s no secret that a backyard garden is always the best place to grow all of the various ingredients that can be included in all of the foods that you enjoy eating. Even better is the fact that you will be able to grow everything yourself rather than having to make a trip to the local supermarket in order to purchase everything.
Here are five of the best fruits and vegetables that you should consider growing in your own beautiful Texas garden any time of the year.
Strawberries
One of the most delicious fruits that everyone always enjoys has to be strawberries. This is a fruit that is typically planted between the months of October and November; however, this generally depends on what portion of the state of Texas that you may reside in. There are many different varieties of strawberries, but many of them tend to thrive in beds of sandy-loam or sandy soil, accompanied by good amounts of sun and water.
Garlic
Garlic is perhaps one of the most popular vegetables that can be added to any dish to help add that extra kick of flavor. This particular vegetable, when planted, will always require extra amounts of nitrogen supplemented soil and water, meaning that you will always need to take the time to ensure that your garden has enough of both of these if you plan on growing garlic cloves. Additionally, they will need exposure to full amounts of sunlight, meaning that you will likely need to consider growing an east-west garden space specifically for garlic.
Tomatoes
When it comes to tomatoes, you will need to make sure this particular fruit (or vegetable? Has that argument been laid to rest yet?) is able to get plenty of sunlight while it’s growing. This means you should consider investing in a garden with raised beds in either a south or southeastern direction. Additionally, air circulation is equally as important, as is access to plenty of water to help the plants grow.
Radish
Another delicious vegetable with many people is the radish. However, this is one type of root vegetable that never handles high temperatures very well at all, meaning that the fall and winter seasons are always the best times of year to plant radishes. Even better is the fact that they only require a little amount of space, as well as a partial amount of shade in order to grow well.
Turnip
The turnip, which is another type of root vegetable, is also able to tolerate moderate amounts of shade in order to grow rather well. On the other hand, they will also do equally well provided you allow them to receive at least six hours of full sunlight every day.
These are just a select few of the many different fruits and vegetables that can grow in the state of Texas. For more information, it’s recommended that you speak to your local gardening care expert, especially depending on the specific area of the state in which you currently reside, as there may be some fruits and vegetable plants that may do better in some areas than others.
