How to prevent a pumpkin patch from growing in your front yard

It’s Halloween season which means trick or treating, costumes and carving pumpkins. But be careful! If you don’t take some precautions when proudly displaying your jack o’ lanterns in your front yard you could accidentally end up with your very own pumpkin patch in your front yard. Here are some steps to prevent pumpkin seeds from sprouting in your yard.

Scoop the Pumpkin Patch Out

When carving a jack o’ lantern the first step is to cut a hole out of the top or bottom and scoop out all the seeds from the inside. This allows you to more easily carve your pumpkin. But it also prevents the seeds from ending up in your yard. Even more reason is you can roast the seeds for a yummy snack.

Place Pumpkin on a Platter

You can also put your pumpkin on a large platter or plate when putting it outside to light. This keeps any remaining seeds from making contact with your front yard soil. It also keeps the bottom of the pumpkin from rotting as quickly when in contact with soil.

Clean up Seeds

Before the pumpkin becomes too rotted it needs to be disposed of properly either through composting or garbage disposal. When disposing of it pick up all pumpkin seeds that are left behind. If your jack o’ lantern design utilized pumpkin seeds be extra thorough when cleaning up.

If you leave seeds sitting on top of your yard they can easily sprout. Pumpkins are very hardy plants and don’t need a lot of care to grow. Pumpkins love hotter weather which means Texas is the perfect state to grow them in, even in October. However, they can sprout in the following spring so you may not even realize you missed a seed or two for months.
