3 Useful Tips to Help Remove Weeds

Regardless of whether or not we want to accept it, weeds will always grow in our gardens. They end up making our gardens look much less beautiful than they should be, and all because they want to compete for both nutrients and water. The best way to help solve this issue is to simply remove the weeds themselves.

Unfortunately for us, the weeds end up simply growing back, often because of the following reasons:

• They were not completely removed due to a portion of their roots remaining in the soil.
• Your garden is surrounded by woods or another type of non-landscaped area that contains a lot of weeds.
• Your lawn is not dense enough, causing empty spots to enable weeds to settle down and spread.

Here are three useful tips to make note of in order to help you with removing weeds in the most effective manner possible.

Check the Roots

Perhaps the most effective way to remove weeds is to do so by hand; however, this is also typically the hardest manner in which to remove them. In order to ensure that this is done properly, the entire weed needs to be removed with its roots. If a weed contains shallow roots, it can just be held by the stem and be gently pulled. Weeds with much deeper roots, however, will require extra care when being removed. If you have a small-sized hoe at your disposal, you can use this to dig in the soil around the stem in order to loosen the soil itself. This will enable you to obtain a firmer grasp of the stem of the weed. From there, you can then pull it. You may find that you will have to dig a bit deeper and pull several more times until you are able to successfully retrieve the entire root.

Use the Right Products

Some individuals also choose to use chemical weed killing products to remove weeds if they find that there are too many weeds to remove either by hand or with any kind of gardening tool. This type of product is generally sprayed directly on each weed; however, it’s extremely important to note that this type of product is one that’s not environmentally-friendly and should only be used if it’s absolutely necessary to do so. Some of these products are designed to kill all sorts of weeds such as crabgrass, clover, and dandelions. The products, however, do not cause any damage to your lawn. You can also purchase a chemical weed killing concentrate, which can be mixed with water and then sprayed wherever it is needed. Once the spraying has been done, you will begin to see results after about 24 hours or so. Once the weeds have died, they will need to then be removed by hand. Unfortunately, one of the downsides of chemical weed killers is that the weeds may not entirely die and that the chemicals only kill what they touch. This means that if the weeds were not sprayed in a sufficient enough manner, they may not completely die.

Know Which Garden Tools to Use

Gardening tools are an amazing alternative to help with pulling weeds as opposed to pulling them by hand, which can be time-consuming itself. If you have weeds with more shallow roots, a regular garden hoe can be used; however, weeds with deeper roots will likely require a winged weeder. This type of tool will require you to place the bottom tip of the blade next to the stem, making sure that you press down vertically so that the blade pushes into the soil. From there, tilt the weeder towards the ground in order to pull the entire root out.
